WHAT IS PIP?

In medical terms, PIP stands for “personal injury protection” and is a type of insurance that covers medical expenses for people that are injured in auto accidents. PIP insurance coverage is automatically included in all auto insurance policies for residents of Oregon. PIP Insurance also covers any passengers that are injured in a vehicle collision.

Regardless of who caused an auto accident, the expenses for both the policyholder and passengers in the policyholder’s vehicle will be covered by PIP insurance. While the benefits from PIP Insurance are immediate to anyone injured in the covered vehicle, collecting from a PIP policy does not limit a person’s right to sue an at-fault driver for any damages caused. Using PIP Insurance also does not impact the policyholder’s insurance coverage or cause an increase in their rates.
